The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 三星半。很难哭诶，也许是因为影片始终维持了一种幽默和夸张的语调。“文本细读”一下，盛装骨灰的容器/包装的变化呼应了皮兰德娄的创作始终探索的“生活的运动和形式的固有冲突”，自我分裂出的“赤裸裸的假面”抵御难以把握的混沌世界，《已故的马蒂亚·帕斯卡尔》算是标志性的作品。抬棺巡游戏，仰视镜头中棺材抬起落下与阳台孩童观礼自下而上的运镜构成某种反讽的张力。
这样一部绝对的形式主义电影以其晦涩的台词、发展缓慢的剧情以及众多镜头所带来的隐喻而很难受大部分观众喜爱，但电影中诸多极其壮美的镜头、具有宗教仪式感的布景、带有宿命感的长镜头和表达时间流逝的伪全景转场都值得细细品味

用意我大概能明白，用一种反英雄的方式来重新讲高文的故事，里面有一些很特别的隐喻是不是有些晦涩了。但是光影和景色实在太美了，形式上充满了Anglo-Saxon时期的神秘感，配乐也特别棒，几段吟唱太美了。Green Chapel实在太漂亮了。(但漏雨)
越来越故弄玄虚，越来越不会说人话。恐怖和寓言都只停留在了华丽阴鸷的皮囊。
色彩营造气氛，尾声有黄粱一梦的感觉。传奇？神话？幻觉？谎言？整体过于晦涩而有故作高深之嫌。
6/10。将诺奖作家的骨灰带回故土，棺材当作牌桌、百姓吃瓜憋笑，像更私人的《杰出公民》。后半段黑白转彩色，皮兰德娄的遗作《钉子》，完成双重告别。一阵海风带走剩余的骨灰，真温柔。并不了解这对导演兄弟，所以无感弟弟与哥哥漫长的告别。
气氛营造得好，光影也漂亮。但是这到底是一个什么无聊故事。另外，真的没人觉得男主演技奇差。

意大利电影的诙谐与宏大告诉混乱的柏林这才是cinema，大师就是大师，老人与孩童一体。

作家的骨灰用写满文字的报纸包裹，小男孩提起小狗的后肢玩耍。
我不理解，感觉不伦不类，这也太装了…David Lowery更适合去搞装置艺术。
叙事够简单，2.5吧，整体是两头不讨好的作品。局部表达可以看出Lowery的作者性很羸弱，而投身产业条线后，反倒让人误以为是文艺大导被商业制作禁锢住表达一般。与其说是惋惜，不如说是心疼，一个有文艺梦但拍不出水平的尴尬导演。
邪魅史诗，精美绝伦的画面，一头雾水的故事。
